My parents claim that all the greenmarket fruit this year has been better than usual. Lately I've been eating the funny white, doughnut-shaped peaches and they've been great.

Thanks! I have peaches and figs in the fridge and went googling to see if anyone had roasted them together. I plan to partially follow your recipe, but to skip the wine and instead add ground ginger with the honey and then put some raspberries and some mascarpone cheese.

You're not being cranky. :-) We had a peach tree in our yard when I was a child. Fresh, homegrown peaches are the best.

Your dessert looks great.

No, you're totally right.

But if you ARE craving peaches and they're not exactly in season and you have to make do with rock-hard supermarket specimens, there's still hope for you. Make peach sauce! It's easy as pie: dice peaches, put in saucepan with enough water to cover the bottom, simmer for an hour or two. Add brown sugar (not too much!) and cinnamon to taste. It tastes amazing served warm with pancakes, or can be chilled and used as jam.
